CHAPTER 4
Starting Up and Shutting
Down OpenLinux
Once you have installed OpenLinux, you can immediately start using it to run
Linux applications for Web browsing, word processing, or other uses. This chap-
ter describes how to start your OpenLinux system, log in using a user account
you created during installation, and then shut down Linux when you’re finished
for the day.
NOTE: It’s common in many environments to leave a Linux
system running for weeks or months without shutting it off.
Starting Your New OpenLinux system
Working with OpenLinux is easy because the graphical system is pre-configured
during installation. In most cases, you’ll never see a character-mode display or
have to enter a cryptic command to get started with OpenLinux.
To start your OpenLinux system, turn on your computer and select OpenLinux
from the BootMagic or the LILO boot prompt if necessary. After a moment, you
see a screen that describes the boot process of OpenLinux. The Linux kernel is
started, hardware components are reviewed, and core services are launched.
NOTE: If you can’t remember the names of your boot parti-
tions at the LILO prompt, press the tab key. It will show you
the names of the bootable partitions. Type the name of the
one you want and press Enter.
